Touching the sky from a maple tree

In September, when the leaves get coloured, every visitor perceives the inimitability of this region.

Eng-Alm is the biggest alpine pasture of Europe.
Here everybody can see how farmers are important for taking care of our landscape. Thanks to their constant care and a regular use of the alpine pastures the big Ahornboden (Maple Plain) can be maintained in perfect conditions. In summer almost 500 cows graze on this alpine pasture. Their milk is taken directly to a local cheese factory and is used to produce mountain cheese and butter. The so called “Enger Bergkäse“ (Eng mountain cheese) has been awarded several times with the gold medal in occasion of the international Cheese Olympiads.

When cows come down from mountain pastures

Winter is coming and it is getting colder, especially on the high-altitude planes. This is the time when cattle are taken from mountain pastures back to its stable.

This moment of the year is celebrated in many towns you can also admire parades of festively adorned cows. Also, today in many villages, cows are taken to the valley on foot, sometimes through many kilometres, because alpine pastures cannot be reached by truck. Experience the old tradition of cattle driving together with the local people and enjoy traditional music and good simple fare!
