Freundsberg Castle

Freundsberg Castle towers on a well recognisable steep hill in the South part of the town Schwaz. It was built in the 12th century as residence of the lords of Freundsberg, one of the most significant Tyrolese noble dynasties.

Freundsberg Castle was residence of the knight of Freundsberg and was built in 1150. The chapel was sanctified in 1177, while in 1467 Duke Sigismund der Münzreiche (Sigmund the coin rich) bought both the castle and the court. The building was reconstructed in 1472-1475. Between 1634- and 1637 the castle church was built. It is a cultural gem from the late renaissance. Since 1812 the castle belongs the city of Schwaz. In 1948 the Museum of the city was inaugurated. It shows cultural and economical development of the silver city Schwaz.
