Kolsassberg

Kolsassberg is a little independent village which is situated at 906 m above the sea level. It counts approx. 750 inhabitants and 60 secondary residences. Kolsassberg belongs to the parish of Kolsass. This approx. 35 km² big village is located in the wonderful Low Inn Valley, in the south of river Inn on the western side of Weerbach Valley, between Tux Prealps and Karwendel mountains.
Kolsassberg was mentioned for the first time in 1196 and includes four districts: Außerberg, Innerberg, Hochhäuser and Merans. Kolsassberg can be reached via Kolsass. This way goes further to Sagalm (1,712m) at the feet of “Roten Wand“ (2,252 m) and to Weidener Hütte (1,799 m). Here an important passage crosses over the Nafingalm, the 2,292 m high Geiseljoch and the Geiselalm towards Tux Valley and Zill Valley.
You can find the municipal office in front of “Restaurant Hofer Stubn“ in Rettenbergstraße. This building includes a kindergarten and many associations’ offices. You can see the little “Bergkirchl” (Mountain church, inaugurated in 1974) also from afar. It is a little cosy church, the best place for familiar parties, such as baptisms and small-sized weddings. Just beneath the church you’ll find the elementary school and “Hotel Jägerhof“
Kolsassberg is a perfect starting point for beautiful walking and biking tours. There are unlimited possibilities that fit every taste and wish, e.g. a romantic excursion across suspension bridges to alpine chalet “Die Rote Wand“, or a tour uphill to the mountain’s crest. Mid December the "Kolsassberg Run" is a highlight for every mountain runner. In the winter season beginners can try out their “first steps“ at the”Knappnlift“, a practice ski lift, while advanced skiers can use the “Hoferlift“ and “Jägerhoflift“. Or would you fancy a sleigh ride? In this area you will find a natural toboggan run leading you to alpine restaurant “Gartlach“. Discover nature and all its beauties – just take time and enjoy silence and pure air in the Tyrolese mountains!
The most important building of this district area is the so called “Schlossruine Rettenberg“ (Ruins of Rettenburg Castle). Nowadays all you can see are only some rests of the ancient castle, which knight Florian Waldauf founded after 1492 as “New-Rettenberg”. Since that time the castle is a private property. Even though it is just a ruin, the castle has still a charming, magnetic power and it is able to create a romantic, impressive atmosphere. Especially the popular Castle Festival during the third weekend of July is a great highlight, that you cannot miss.
